I may eventually open up the case and try to get a serial console on the thing. I've also had no luck trying to use the reset+TFTP upload method. My router is physically nearly identical to the first picture on the OpenWRT wiki page you posted it has three antennas, but it only has a single computer icon/LED on the front for indicating LAN connectivity (not four LEDs like the picture). Both the box and the footer on the router admin page claim the hardware to be "Archer C1200 v1.0", and the router admin page says my current firmware is "1.0.0 Build 20160601 rel.44450 (CA)".

You should be able to upgrade to the C7 v2.0 firmware found here using the web GUI in DD-WRT. Now, you want to upgrade using files that have had the bootloader removed, so as to get around version checks. You said that you couldn't get ANY firmware to take, but if you have a C5 v1.x it should install just fine.

Next, you have to update to a version of DD-WRT that your router will accept. So the first thing you should do is confirm you have a C5 v1.x. You can replace the current firmware with a version of the original firmware that is not version locked and then use the instructions I posted before. They won't let you upgrade to any firmware that doesn't pass their check. TP-Link had apparently instituted version locking since I had purchased my C5 about a year ago. So then I went and exchanged it for a new C5 and ended up running into the same problem you did. Turns out it's different than the C5 and has the wrong chipset. First mistake I made was to go buy an Archer C50. What I thought was going to be an easy replication of something I had done before turned into a major hassle. I had the same problem when a friend told me he wanted the same thing I had.
Things may get interesting if they start making competing releases in the future. So, right now, you can view LEDE as a continuation of OpenWRT (as it has made a release recently, and OpenWRT has not since the split). There have been ongoing talks about bringing the projects back together, but no resolution is in sight.

But so far the breakup has been amicable, and the actual code is still mostly shared. This is obviously not ideal for either project. Now both projects are theoretically under active development, but LEDE has most (but not all!) of the active developers and OpenWRT has the name people know and (crucially) the wiki and forum archives. So they forked the code and formed the LEDE project. A while back, a bunch of the most active OpenWRT developers got fed up with some internal issues in the project (you can find their breakup email if you care what the issues were).
